Online Ad Forecast Positive for Social Media

Fitch’s outlook for online revenues are stable, expecting single digit increases. That revenue growth picture is in line with other forecasters like eMarketer, which has revised it’s 2009 growth estimates to 8.9%.

In general, CPM growth will cool, though individual segments like online video and social media are likely to continue growing.

Over the long term, Fitch anticipates online ad growth to rebound from economic weakness and continue to capture share from traditional outlets.

NPR Launches Social Media Initiative

npr-imagesNational Public Radio (NPR) has launched the tools to form an online community to link it’s personalities and loyal followers on NPR.Org.

NPR believes that a community already exists that includes people who work there, work at member stations, listen to NPR on the radio, use NPR.Org and those who support NPR. There is an affinity to the movement called NPR and it is believed that few other American news organizations inspire such allegiance.

The goal is to enhance the experience of the loyal followers of NPR to provide a mechanism for more interaction and engagement. Also to link members of it’s large audience to foster communication amongst this base. NPR has added functionality that will allow anyone who registers with NPR.org the opportunity to comment on a story, create a profile page, a forum for infinite conversations on NPR.Org and more. NPR also hopes to get story ideas, tips, insights into the world we cover, tough criticism and even the occasional compliment through the online community. NPR wants to share more of the news we gather and the stories we tell with the audience.  Of particular importance is that in this effort NPR maintain it’s identity and style in this online effort.

NPR is quick to remind us that it is a non-profit and this effort is not intended to further commercialization goals. It would appear that NPR has the ingredients to extend it’s presence into an online community that has vitality. We will watch closely NPR’s efforts to build it’s online community.

Fitchburg Red Raiders Onto Super Bowl

Fitchburg High School won their annual grudge match versus Leominster on Thanksgiving Day. One of the oldest rivalries in the country, Fitchburg bested Leominster in their 125th meeting by a score of 20-17 in overtime. This was only the second time in that this game was decided in overtime.

Fitchburg went onto play in the Central Mass Division 1 playoff game last night versus Shrewsbury and the Red Raiders kept their winning ways as they won 33-7 at Arthur I. Hurd Memorial Field in Ashburnham.

Fitchburg now moves onto play Longmeadow on Saturday in the Central-West Division 1 Super Bowl.

Congrats to Coach Ray Cosenza and all of the Fitchburg Red Raiders.

Digg On The Move

In a story released today in BusinessWeek, Jay Adelson, Digg’s CEO, says that the popular news aggregation Web site is focusing on profitability. I would bet that Digg will also move to the acquirer role here as well so that it can deploy some of the $28.5 million it raised from from Highland Capital Partners, Greylock Partners, Omidyar Networkand SVB Capital and this past summer. Digg is great for sharing and also seeing what is hot. Look for more good things on the horizon with this focus.

Power.com: For Social Networking Power Users

Chances are you use at least two major social networks - 49 million people, for example, visited both MySpace and Facebook in October. Power.Com wants to be the “dashboard” that we use to interface to one or more social networks.

Power.Com has aggregated over 5 million users in the last year with most of these users outside the U.S. market. Power.Com launched in the U.S. today and got some great press across many outlets including New York Times, CNet, CIO Today, Washington Post, TechCrunch and more.

There have been many services that attempt to do some of the things Power.com is doing such as MyLifeBrand, Spokeo, Loopster, ProfileLinker and others. It will be interesting to keep tabs on how the Power.Com U.S. launch goes. Stay tuned here at JeffBennett.Org.

Power.Com investors include Esther Dyson and Draper Fisher.

Gas @ $1.73/Gallon

gas-prices-nov-28-2008Filled up today and paid $1.73 per gallon for Self-Serve at Irving Oil in NH. This time around I was able to buy the Banana Bread for 89 cents and still got out for under $30. It was a long time ago that happened.

Gas prices are surely dropping like the Red Sox of old in August. Good news as we enter the Winter months.

Many web sites have been tracking gas prices in last year. Check out this cool MapQuest Gas Tracker/Mapper that is tracking prices by location. Another great web site is GasPriceWatch.Com which is built on Google Maps. Both sites allow you to check out prices across the U.S. by location and then you can go buy from the cheapest source.

It will interesting to track this weekly on the JeffBennett.Org Gas Price Index as we go forward to watch pricing fluctuations and also it’s impact on other aspects of the economy.

KindleBoards.Com Emerges As Social Community

The Amazon Kindle is a revolutionary product for the next generation of book publishing and reading. As an early adopter I can attest that the products functionality is great and the library of titles is expanding rapidly. Some say this is next iPod and I think they are right.

The web has now spawned a social media community of Kindle enthusiasts at KindleBoards.Com. KindleBoards provides a discussion forum for Kindle owners and for people who have interest in or questions about the Kindle. Kindle users have embraced the site and participate actively in its discussion forums. Features of the site include Kindle news, user tips, accessory pictures and reviews, answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), book reviews, and discussion about Amazon’s downloadable books, blogs, newspapers, and magazines.

KindleBoards features an advanced search function, enabling visitors to readily locate discussions of interest. Users can include images and videos in their forum posts. An active team of moderators engages in site discussions, and hosts Kindle-related events in the forums.

The KindleBoards “Link-Maker” function facilitates the posting of clickable book covers in user posts. The resulting discussion threads are populated with colorful icons representing the books being discussed. Those icons may be clicked by readers to immediately access and download books in Amazon Kindle Store.

KindleBoards is an independent, free resource for Kindle enthusiasts. In November 2008, KindleBoards attracted over 500,000 page views with 7,000 unique visitors daily. Not bad for a community that is only twelve months old.
